- It is typical of Jennings to combine a dental appointment with a secret visit to an auction sale; and it is equally typical of him to return from the sale with a camping stove and an oil painting instead of the tennis racquets he had been planning to buy! A trifling mistake perhaps but one that was destined to wreck the smooth running routine of Linbury Court School.
- For the camping stove led to the discovery of a cave on the South Downs, to Jennings' pot-holing exploits and to Darbishire's attempts to decorate their hide-out in the manner of primitive cave dwellers.
