- Surprises are in store for Sarah, John and Paul who live with their grandparents in the Lake District village of Hyghgyll. Their little sister Mary, whom they have not seen since she was a baby, is being sent home by their missionary parents. Then Chuck Peters, a young American arrives in Hyghgyll searching for a song which he believes may be found in the village. The children assist in his search and discover that only one person can help them - Auld Larrie, a strange shepherd who lives in a lonely cottage on the fells guarded by fierce dogs.
