- The story of a boy living in the shadow of Windsor Castle who discovers its history for himself by taking part in it. Sometimes with his friend Manfred, sometimes alone, he travels back through time to the days when the first wooden stockade was built at Windsor at William the Conqueror's command and through the centuries he sees the Castle grow as sovereign after sovereign adds to its greatness.
- The boy takes part in feasts and fighting, helps to build the Castle walls, works in the royal kitchens, and attends many Kings and Queens. He is present at the splendid celebrations that mark the founding of the Order of the Garter by Edward III, but he also has his share of danger when Windsor Castle is besieged in the reign of King John. And as the story unfolds the boy's adventures in the past are crowned by an exciting experience in the Windsor Castle of today.
