A young boy, Carlo, is sent to live with his grandmother when his father goes to fight in WWII. He is unable to stand up to the members of the tough neighbourhood gang. He is befriended by Joey J who has all the strengths that Carlo lacks but is himself victimised for he is brain damaged. Carlo's battle on Joey J's behalf and his confrontation with the people who intend to commit Joey J to a home for the mentally handicapped, make this a memorable and touching story.
