JOHN MARSDEN'S WILL: THE HORNBY ESTATE CASE 1780-1840

by Emmeline Garnett

Published by The Hambledon Press. 1st. 1998

Slightly better than very good condition in a slightly better than very good dustwrapper. The Hornby Castle Dispute. The story of an extraordinary legal case. John Marsden was a mentally retarded Lancashire gentleman, looked after by his aunt. A servant, George Wright, became the aunt's lover and steward of the Marsden's estate and continued in this fashion after the aunt's death. When John Marsden finally died, his will effectively left Hornby Castle to the steward. The will was then contested by the heir at law basing his claim on the incapacity of his cousin to understand and therefore endorse a complex will... a fascinating story. Blue cloth boards, gilt title to spine. B/w illustrations.

SIGNED by the author (no dedication) to front endpaper. Also includes an invitation to the previous owner to celebrate the publication of this book. Previous owner's bookplate to lower corner of front endpaper. Pictorial dustwrapper is clean.
