January

After the celebrations of the festive season January is normally seen as a dark and cold  month just to get through until payday.
I think January 2021 will be different, firstly we will hopefully  see the vaccination against Covid 19 rolled out around the world and what an amazing thing that will be!!

So such good news is something to celebrate, so I thought I would look to see what other good or interesting events have happened in January over the years.

On January 3rd, 1924 the British archaeologist Howard Carter and his team uncovered a stone sarcophagus, containing three coffins nested within each other. The last, golden one contained the mummified body of the teenage pharaoh Tutankhamun.

Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson at Daresbury in Cheshire, on 27 January 1832. He was an English author, mathematician, logician, anglican deacon and photographer. He is of course the creator of Alice in Wonderland.

Hugh Lofting was born in January 1886 and was the creator of Doctor Dolittle, he originally trained as a civil engineer and the stories came into being when he wrote to his children from the trenches.

Another January birthday is the creator of those childhood favourites, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit and Eeyore and of course Christopher Robin et al.
A.A. Milne was born on January 18th 1882 and his books and characters continue to delight people of all ages.

Other January highlights:

  • Elvis Presley and David Bowie were both born in January
  • As was Stephen Hawking, Rowan Atkinson and Janis Joplin
  • Jan 1968 Gardeners’ World was 1st shown on BBC
  • Jan 1922 Canada, insulin was used for the first time on a diabetic patient.
  • Jan 1924 1st Winter Olympics in Chamonix

"To read a poem in January is as lovely as to go for a walk in June."
-  Jean-Paul Sartre
