But is this proud and beautiful youth the Florentine duke Cosimo I de' Medici, or is he Frencesco Guardi, unknown to history except for Vasari's mention that he was painted by Pontormo during the harrowing seige of Florence in 1529-302? This book reproduces in size and in the fold-out format of the original copy of Utamaro's 'Momo-chidori kyoka awase' in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. To accomodate the left-to-right tradition of the Western reader, the sequence of illustrations has been reversed, however the Japanese verses should be read from right to left. Green cloth boards, white title label to front board. Boards have no spine as book opens concertina style. Colour illustrations in facsimile. B/w illustrations to rear. ISBN: 0870992805. A lovely copy, contained in publisher's slipcase which is lightly faded to spine and lightly knocked at top & tail, foxing to top edge.
