Containing Figures Of All The Recent Species, With Names and Other Information. Habits and localities, range of depth of marine species and comparative abundance. Second edition, revised and enlarged. 26 tissue-guarded hand-coloured plates depicting 668 species. Red cloth, gilt title to front cover, embossed decorative borders to covers. All edges gilt. Spine and corners bumped and worn with small tear in cloth at base of spine. Covers darkened at edges and on spine. Front hinge cracked. Inscription in ink on verso of front endpaper. All plates present. One tissue guard detached. Foxing to tissue guards. Plates clean except for a very few which have minor foxing at the edges. A bright copy.

Very good condition in a slightly better than very good dustwrapper.
American Edition. New Naturalist Monograph no. 16. 27 b/w plates. 24 diagrams. A study of the salmon's life stages. Detailed sections on spawning and homing, and a most interesting conclusion by the eminent author that salmon do not feed in fresh water. This raises an interesting question for those who indulge in fly-fishing! This book beautifully describes the strange and mysterious life history of the salmon. Some spotting to covers. Pale foxing to endpapers and outer page edges. Previous owners bookplate stuck to front pastedown. Wrapper is unevenly browned.
