Poortvliet and his scientist friend Wil Huygen had spent over twenty years observing the life and work of the Gnome, and their report at last shatters the age-old myths of song and legend. A book full of lore and history... and fun for, of course, all these factual data are invented. Large format. Brown cloth boards, gilt title to spine and gnome vignette to front board. Colour illustrations throughout. Pages are not numbered. ISBN: 0810909650. Minor foxing to text block. Front free-endpaper lightly creased and has a light pencil erasure mark. Minor foxing to rear endpaper else contents clean. White pictorial dustwrapper is lightly browned and laminate protecting the dustwrapper is creased across the middle.

This the only biography of one of America's greatest and most influential cartoonists, Winsor McCay (1867-1934), the universally acknowledged first master of both the comic strip and the animated cartoon. Although invented by others, both genres were developed into enduring popular art of highest imagination through McCay's innovative genius.
