ANGLICAN ATTITUDES: A STUDY OF VICTORIAN RELIGIOUS CONTROVERSIES

by A.O.J. Cockshut

Published by Collins Clear-Type Press. 1st. 1959

Very good condition in a very good dustwrapper. In the second half of the 19th century the Church of England suddenly found that its official religious monopoly was being seriously threatened. At a time of growing challenge from the Roman Church on the one hand and Agnosticism on the other, Anglicans were thrown into confusion by three celebrated controversies - the Gorham case, Essays & Reviews, and the Colenso case. A most readable account of the events which ended in the body of Anglican Bishops openly defying the Privy Council. Red cloth boards, gilt title to spine. 128 pages including index.

Boards clean, top corners bumped. Text block browned with minor foxing. Neat inscription in ink to front endpaper. A few foxspots to prelims and endpapers. Pictorial dustwrapper is scuffed and a little grubby, worn at corners, lightly faded to spine.
