THE ART OF THE FIRST FLEET & OTHER EARLY AUSTRALIAN DRAWINGS
by Bernard Smith; Alwyne Wheeler
Published by Yale University Press. 1st. 1988
Nearly fine condition in a very good dustwrapper. Edited by Smith & Wheeler. In 1788, the First Fleet landed in New South Wales, and European settlement in Australia began. Among those on board the eleven ships of the fleet were artists who recorded their impressions of the land, its indigenous people, its flora and fauna, and incidents or events which they considered significant. This volume contains many little-known works of art from the voyage and from the early years of settlement. Large format. Pale grey cloth boards, gilt title to spine. Colour & b/w illustrations. 256 pages including index.
A lovely copy. Pictorial dustwrapper is unevenly faded, mainly to front panel.
