The conference was held in Oxford in September 1969 in response to the renewed interest shown over the previous 10-15 years in the study of group theory. It was designed for young research workers in the sphere of simple finite groups and mathematicians engaged in allied fields wishing to increase their knowledge of the methods and results of modern finite group theory.
