MARRIAGE A-LA-MODE A RE-VIEW OF HOGARTH'S NARRATIVE ART
Illustrated by William Hogarth
Published by Manchester University Press. 1st. 1983
Nearly fine condition in a slightly better than very good dustwrapper. The issue of prints for one of Hogarth's series was an eagerly awaited event in the 1730s and 1740s, and Marriage A-la-mode is one of the most important, as well as one of the most popular, of the great satirist's creations. As well as forming a narrative, the pictures contain a wealth of meaningful allusions - myths and legends; latest fashions in clothing; architecture and furniture; heraldry and religious symbolism - the significance of many of these has been missed. This book analyses all the pictures in depth in the light of contemporary manners, and allows us to see them afresh through the eyes of Hogarth's contemporaries. Brown cloth boards, gilt title to spine. B/w illustrations.
Dustwrapper is slightly faded to spine.
