Yorkshire – or God’s Own Country

Is it too early to talk about holidays? – I don’t think it is, it’s how we get through the winter months.

I am off for a short break to Yorkshire in the Spring, York to be precise. York comes from the Viking name for the city, Jorvik and shire comes from an old English or Nordic word.

I have been to York before, but not for many years now, and I am eager to reacquaint myself with all it has to offer or as much as can be accomplished in a weekend.

I am looking forward to visiting York Minster, which if I remember rightly on my last visit was covered in scaffolding, so this time I will be able to see it in all its glory, especially the Rose Window.

Betty’s Tea Rooms will also be on my itinerary, I love their Fat Rascals and Yorkshire Curd Tarts – after that I might well need a walk along the City Walls.

On another trip to Yorkshire I stayed in a lovely village called Newton Le Willow, where we visited the North York Moors, Grassington – where I first ate Fruit Cake with Wensleydale Cheese, if you have never tried this, it is a marriage made in heaven!!

We also went to Whitby Abbey which overlooks the sea and is said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula – very atmospheric!

Yorkshire has a great history from its industry, railways and National Parks to its beautiful beaches.

Further along the coast is Scarborough with its beautiful double bay, and further on still is Bridlington – great fish and chips!!

I have even won a holiday to Yorkshire, a coach trip with a group of people who were much older than me at the time, but a free holiday is a free holiday and my other half and I had a great time.

I know this sounds as though I work for the Yorkshire Tourist Board, but it is a truly wonderful place to visit.
