Racinet's Le Costume historique is in two closely linked but radically different parts: the 473 plates reproduced here (Racinet considered certain of them double plates, and numbered them 1-500), and the long text that accompanies them. The latter offers a commentary on the illustrations, detailing now items of clothing, now a jewel or ornament. Racinet often complements this informmation with more general considerations and anecdotes illuminating the charator and customs of a community. The original version or this text runs to nearly 1300 pages and would, if reproduced without abridgement, have consttutcd much too large a volume. But it seemed important to give the reader some idea of its contents, were it only in fragmentary form, and we have therefore selected a few segments and certain extracts from these long commentaries.
