- Janey leaned hard on the bell of the house: knocked and looked through the letter-box. What she saw in the hall told her all she wanted to know, trained as she was to housebreak by bullying Lou. But the house has surprises in store for Janey, and meeting Nora Woodcroft, who lives there alone, precipitates for her a personal dilemma: Janey, feisty and aggressive, develops a real affection for the old lady. Forced to witness the horrifying results of their thieving, Janey becomes increasingly desperate to break away from the violent domination of Lou and his son.
