Contents

  • Eighteen-year-old Sabrina Redmond has dreamed of New York, her mother's city, but she never imagined she would go there as the Milford heiress.
  • She travels alone from London, and, met at the docks by an unknown uncle and aunt, is taken to a dark old apartment building in the East Thirties. The place seems almost deserted, for most people have escaped from the heatwave, and immediately Sabrina is uneasy.. The family lawyer only seems to want to help her, but she doesn't much like her new relations. It is a relief to escape into the hot city, to meet a friend from the ship, Helga Schmidt, and a young man called Penrod Hadden, whose aunt she knows in London.
  • Sabrina thinks she is being followed and surely it can't be a coincidence that both Helga and Penrod are mysteriously attacked. She befriends young Milt, who lives in the basement of the apartment building and no one knows about the lonely, inquisitive little boy.
