- The Morton family go to spend Christmas at Witchend in Shropshire. Here Dickie, Mary and David meet up with their friends Petronella (Peter) Sterling, Jenny Harman and Tom Ingles.Mary dreams that they will have another wonderful adventure together.
- Close to Witchend is the State Forest which is being pillaged by 'Christmas Tree' thieves and the foresters, their numbers being depleted by illness, are desperately trying to find out how the gang is getting the trees away. On the other side of the forest is a Gliding Station; a mysterious glider, which appears at night, plays an important part in the plot.
- Almost at once the Mortons and their friends swing into action and the story moves to a terrific climax when Jenny and Tom in the look-out tower warn Forestry Headquarters that the forest is on fire and immediately afterwards the lone glider crashes into the tower and is wrecked.
- Magnificent team work by the Lone Piners ( helped by Macbeth, the Morton's Scottie dog) and the discoveries they make greatly help the police to round up the crooks
