THE GRAND PRIX CAR (2 VOLUMES)
Written by Laurence Pomeroy. Illustrated by L.C. Cresswell.
Stock no. 2140149
Published by Motor Racing Publications Ltd.; Temple Press Books. Circa 1956. Very good condition in a very good dustwrapper.

Large format. B/w photos. Folding b/w diagrams. In Volume One of this classic history of Grand Prix cars and their races Laurence Pomeroy covers the period 1906 to 1939. The early chapters are devoted to a detailed survey of the contemporary racing background in the course of which the results of 235 major events are recorded and analysed and every new car which appeared during the period is briefly described and assessed, both in relation to its competitors and on the merits of its design. The second and greater part of the volume contains detailed technical descriptions of 17 outstanding examples of the Grand Prix car, from the 1908 Itala to the 1939 Mercedes-Benz Type W.I63, thus providing an unique basis for comparison between characteristic cars each of which was at the peak of technical development at the time it was built. The illustrations, which are a major feature of this important work, include 17 large-scale drawings, numerous detail sketches, 52 photographs and a lithographic section of 14 pages of sketches by L. C. Cresswell. Volume Two Describes and analyses all Grand Prix cars which were prominent in the post-war period from the introduction of Formula I in 1947 up to Formula II in 1954, includes a number of accounts of outstanding races and concludes with a penetrating review of the broad factors which have influenced the design of Grand Prix cars over fifty years of intensive development. Some spotting to covers. Foxing and browning to endpapers, outer page edges and some page margins. Wrapper is edge-creased and browned; some nicks and chips.
