  • Saddlebottom's mother thought it a disgrace that his saddle-shaped patch was on his bottom, not on his back. He will make himself useful she said, she meant as pork and sausages. But Saddlebottom has other ideas. With the help of a friendly rat, he escapes from the miserable sty he has called home, and then he meets Bendigo Bung-Eye, the one-eyed ginger cat, who knows a thing or two about life. This fateful meeting and the sheer mischance that the Wessex Rifles, out on a night exercise, mistake his white rump for one of their targets changes Saddlebottom's life for the better.
