It is always pleasant to chat with customers who drop into our Tintern shop, and I have heard all manner of fascinating anecdotes and family recollections and learned many facts over the years which I would not otherwise have known.
The other day, as I was circumnavigating the shop collecting together books for the orders which had been placed online, I was apprehended by two jovial gentlemen in Room 10 - which is currently home to our collection of Military Books. They were astonished by the range, as well as the quality, of our military books section and were enthusiastically working their way around the shelves, calling out delightedly as they discovered some elusive gem or a volume which brought back memories of previous events in their lives.
Positive feedback from our customers is always welcome and we stopped and chatted for some time, initially discussing various books on warfare and military equipment, and then a range of other subjects including history, politics and art.
We have always had a healthy stock of military books at Stella Books and as this is one of our 'core' subjects the collection has expanded somewhat over recent years! As you might imagine, this involves a certain amount of re-organization and shelf-sorting to accommodate the various military volumes as they are catalogued and housed within the shop. You can be sure that Theresa keeps a close eye on the stock levels of military titles, as she does with all the other subjects in our shop, and ensures that the display is kept in tip-top condition, with books organised neatly by author surname so that we can locate them quickly when they are sold online. Woe betide any staff member who puts a book away in the wrong place!
At the time of writing we have almost 2000 military books in Room 10, and also in our Special Book Room, and they range in price from just a few pounds to several hundreds of pounds. They cover all manner of military subjects including army, navy, and air force. Not surprisingly, books about World War II feature prominently (well over 600), but there are also volumes on African conflicts, Wellington, Napoleon, Civil wars, regimental histories, and war correspondences and diaries to name but a few.
Perhaps you are interested in the History of the Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's) 1914-1919 (Stock 2109024, £80)? Or maybe you want to consult biographical outlines of Cavalry, Yeomanry, armour, artillery, infantry, marine and air force land troops of the regular and reserve forces – then the Lineage Book of British Land Forces 1660-1978 (2 volumes) is just the title for you. Or perhaps you just have an overwhelming desire to read about the Mexican-American War 1846-1848 (Stock 1201274, £60 in mint condition). Don't worry - we can help you.
Whether you visit our shop at Tintern and have a leisurely wander around the shelves (perhaps followed by a local Cream Tea), or browse our catalogues online, we hope that you will enjoy our range of books.
