- When five year old Marigold's parents had to take a long sea voyage she went to live in her grandfather's farm house. James Trevor, a widower of 65, led a carefully organised life at Church Farm. He had the best fishing and shooting in the district and the best gun dog called Rocket. The house was so big he thought he would hardly know Marigold was there.
- He was mistaken. In a short time Marigold had everyone including her grumpy old grandfather under her thumb. She immediately pointed out that Rocket was a silly name for a dog and that she intended to call him Bobby Bocker.
