Contents

  • To Clare life seemed to be over at the age of eighteen, when she was told she was not strong enough to become a nurse. Returning to her quiet home town from the London hospital where she had trained for six months she was bored and unhappy.
  • When the letter came from her cousin Serena with an opportunity to spend the summer as a stewardess on a cruise ship in Holland, it seemed a good chance to get away. She would have time to gather her thoughts and plan for the future. So Clare began her eventful summer on The Red Tulip.
  • She found little time to worry about her own problems as she met the ship's passengers: Victoria and Louise and their fussy, possessive mother; the little boy, Hector, with his imaginary dog; the proud, unhappy, lame young man, Stephen Kane.
  • The summer was full of challenges as The Red Tulip sailed through the Dutch canals to the fascinating towns of Volendam, Amsterdam, Haarlem, The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam. And at the end of the trip, Clare found an exciting future of a very different sort than she had ever dreamed.
