  • Rosamund Lilley won Canon and Mrs Gay's scholarship to the Chalet School and didn't want to go. She thought it would be a "snob" school. Joan Baker, the girl from the same school who had been her evil genius turned up a fortnight after term began as a paying pupil, Joan's father having had a big win on the Football Pools. The problem of Rosamund was fairly easily solved, for she soon found that the Chalet School had no use for snobbery of any kind, but took you for what you were. Joan was more difficult and it was not until the very end of the term that she gave signs that even she was being "straightened out" and on the way to becoming a real member of the Chalet School.
