- The story of four children who go to live Cherry Trer farm whilst their parents are in America. They hear of a "wild" man living in the neighbourhood wood, a wild man who has been known to shake bad boys or even throw them in the river, and out of that mixture of fear and curiosity responsible for many childhood pranks, the four go out to look for him. Luckily for them Tammylan is an exceptional human being, and though he invariably puts the animals' interests first, he gives the Cherry Farm children a chance of making good in his chosen society.
- Benjy, the smaller boy, who is a real animal lover has a marvellous time in the woods at night, in the fields at dusk, with the otters at the river bank or watching lizards in the sunlight.
