PETER AND WENDY
by J.M. Barrie
Illustrated by F.D. Bedford
Published by Hodder & Stoughton. 1st. 1911
Almost very good condition. The first full-length novel featuring Peter Pan who originally appeared in a section of J.M. Barrie's The Little White Bird. A successful play was staged in 1904 entitled Peter Pan Or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Following the success of the play Hodder & Stoughton extracted a number of chapters from The Little White Bird and republished them with illustrations by Arthur Rackham with the title Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens. It wasn't until 1911 that the play was adapted and expanded to novel length and this is the offering we have here. The binding is dark green cloth with gilt titles, a gilt decorative border to front cover with a gilt vignette showing Peter Pan with two mermaids and the crocodile. Elaborate gilt decorations to spine which features Captain Hook. The book is beautifully illustrated in b/w by Bedford with a title page, frontis and 11 other plates. 267 pages.
Uneven fading and some white spots to covers. Bumping and wear to spine and corners; a little fraying of cloth to top and tail of spine. One plate is detached. Foxing to endpapers, outer page edges, some page margins and a few other pages throughout book.
