COLLECTIONS TOWARDS THE HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF THE COUNTY OF HEREFORD (3 VOLUMES)
by John Duncumb; William Henry Cooke
Published by John Murray.
Slightly better than good condition. Large format. 3 volumes. Blue/green cloth with gilt titles to spines. Duncumbs original work is covered in volume I and through to Volume II page 318. B/w plates. Volume III is by Cooke and states that it is a 'Continuation of Duncumb's History'. Volume I contains a general history of Herefordshire and its city and was originally published in 1802, and the first part of a second volume in 1812. Volume III was added later. Due to the death of Charles, 11th Duke of Norfolk (The one who supported Duncumb's work financially), the collection of materials for this work ceased; unsold portions of the work were printed, but not then published and stored until 1837, when the whole stock was purchased by Mr. Thomas Thorpe. Notes inside one of these volumes states this work has been 'Collated as per Upcott'.
Varying marks, wear and scuffs to covers. Some page tears/margin tears to older pages in volumes. A few repairs. Volume I contains 14 + 2 extra and lacks index. Volume II - has 2 plates + 1 extra. Volume III has all plates, as listed.
