But tranquillity and the Jillies are two things that cannot seem to go together, and almost form the beginning they found themselves in the midst of a typical "Jillies' adventure. It started with the mystery about Lisbeth's father: where was he and was he even alive at all? Then there was the threatening attitude of the odious Adolf - not much doubt about him being the enemy. But Miss Nicholls and Herr Stargrun and Johann and the wounded pheasant - were these friends or foes? And as the questions answered themselves, the Jillies realised that this was no minor domestic trouble that they were mixed up in, but a titanic battle for freedom against a ruthless and bestial tyranny.
