- Lucius is a young Roman living in Britain, where he was born. His father holds the respected position of deputy procurator.
- It is planned that Lucius should be apprenticed to a wood-carver at Glevum, and the boy and two slaves, Priscus and Achilles set off. The wood-carver is an unfortunate and stupid man, for not only does he owe money to a former employee of Lucius's father, called Argutus, he agrees when Argutus proposes to take two slaves in lieu of payment, not caring that the slaves are not his to give.
