- Gipsy Latimer is an unusual character and her personality and doings entertain her companions at Briarcroft Hall. It is a rather conventional, steady-going establishment, but Gipsy brings with her ideas picked up abroad, and her influence makes itself felt in amusing ways. She has the gift of leadership and soon begins to be regarded by the juniors as their champion in the long standing feud with the seniors, who presume too much on their privileges. Gipsy's school career is a chequered one - which makes it all the more interesting - but in the end there is no doubt that Gipsy is the Leader of the Lower School.
