  • When Vernon-Smith, the Bounder of the Remove dropped a bombshell by announcing that he was going to cut the Courtfield soccer match, Harry Wharton, Captain of the Remove, was in a spot. Strong opposition from his form-mates forced Smithy to change his mind, but by then Wharton was too angry to take him on again. That set the team against their captain and several refused to plat in the match; which is how Billy Bunter stepped into the team. Not unnaturally Grey friars suffered a resounding defeat.
