  • The tall lean stranger with the American accent wanted to see Lord Mauleverer. He chose an odd way of contacting Mauly as he appeared at the practice nets when the Remove were putting in some training for the cricket match with St. Jim's. Luckily Mauly, Greyfriars' young millionaire wasn't there because Fisher T. Fish, the junior from New York recognised the stranger as Marcus K. Hoot, a notorious kidnapper, whose face was known throughout the U.S.A. He got away with speed when Fish recognised but it didn't put an end to his designs on Lord Mauleverer.
  • It was bad luck for Bunter that he didn't know what went on at nets. So when he wangled himself a tea with the swell of St. Jim's, Arthur Augustus D'Arcy and 'borrowed' Mauly's clothes for the occasion, he had no idea what he was letting himself in for. He soon found out when he met Mr. Hoot on the road and he caught sight of Lord Mauleverer's name in Bunter's purloined hat.
