Contents

  • The Great Elephant War (February - April 1875) began like many other wars before and since, with a misunderstanding. It is not Dr. Jessop's fault that a particularly large and dirty mongrel dog leaves muddy paw-marks all over the Smith's house in Canterbury Lane. But nothing his daughter Harriet says can convince Thomas, Joshua and James Smith that this is the truth. Then Harriet's Aunt Louisa arrives on the scene with her campaign for saving Jumbo of the London Zoological Gardens from being shipped off to Barnum's Circus in America. Somehow Aunt Louisa's campaign and the misunderstanding about the mongrel become tangled together when Aunt Louise tries to recruit Professor Smith to the Cause. Soon all the pupils at Harriet's school, the Oxford Ladies' College, become enthusiastic supporters of the Elephant Crusade and Aunt Louisa engages a Sergeant-Major to drill them in preparation for their protest march in Regent's Park.
