Contents

  • Anna Grimaldi is a 'back-stage' child, the daughter of Griselda Grimaldi, ballet dancer and 'star turn' at the old Dukes Theatre in London. When her mother dies she is brought up by Sarah, her mother's dresser.
  • Anna quickly shows a talent for dancing and, at great sacrifice to Sarah, she goes to the Royal Ballet School. She makes a little money 'on the side' by sitting for students at the Slade School of Art and there she meets and makes a friend of Vicki Scott, Veronica Weston's daughter.
  • Anna is one of the Royal Ballet School's most promising pupils but she is persuaded by Joady, a childhood friend, to leave the school and go to Australia with him to join a ballet company in Sydney. Why she changes her mind at the last moment and decides to stay in England makes an exciting climax to the story.
