• This is the story of two babies, Sam and Vanessa, who were both orphaned in the great earthquake that destroyed Drobnik, the capital city of Slavonia, in 1949. There is a mystery surrounding the babies, One of them is the heir of Sir Gerald Waterford, owner of one the stately homes of England and the other is the child of Maria Schmidt, a Slavonian peasant girl, but nobody knows which is which. As the children grow up, the mystery deepens. Vanessa becomes a ballet dancer and through her we meet Veronica Weston and Sebastian Scott and many other old friends from the earlier 'Wells' books.
