Over the course of a ten year project, archaeologists discovered that Staffoprd in the dark ages had acted as a centre for the delivery of grain tribute, and it was this centre which was commandeered by Aethelflaeda, Lady of the Mercians, for the construction of her 'burh'. This new foundation was a fort, provided with a 'vicus' in which there was practised the centralised production of pottery ('Stafford Ware') and animal products... Large format.
