THE MAGIC STONES: THE STORY OF THE ARCH
Written by Alain. Illustrated by Alain.
Stock no. 1830864
Published by Faber & Faber. 1st 1957. Very good condition in a very good dustwrapper.

High on the Cathedral of Notre Dame is an ugly old gargoyle, the effigy in stone of Mr. Down who, so the story tells, sent the high towers tumbling down time after time in the days before men learned how to buttress an arch. This book tells in story form how early architects defeated Mr. Down and discovered the secret of raising a roof more than a hundred feet, with tall stained-glass windows instead of heavy walls. A fascinating introduction to one of the basic principles of building and architecture - the use of the arch. Blue pictorial paper boards. B/w and red, blue, black & white illustrations. 31 pages. Lower board edges & corners rubbed. Boards clean. Minor foxing to text block else contents clean. Pictorial dustwrapper is edge-worn with a few closed tears (no loss) and is scuffed.
