CINDERELLA
by C.S. Evans
Illustrated by Arthur Rackham
Published by William Heinemann. 1st. 1919
Very good condition in a good dustwrapper. Rackham's illustrations for Cinderella (and also Sleeping Beauty) differ from those in his previous books in that they rely almost entirely on silhouette for their effect. Typically, Rackham completely mastered this new medium, successfully evoking the character of each protagonist through gesture and profile alone. Colour frontis, three double-page silhouette colour illustrations, 14 single page in black-and-white. Orange and black pictorial boards showing Cinderella with the magic pumpkin, rats and the Fairy Godmother. Green/white pictorial endpapers. 110 pages. 10 x 7.5 inches. An extremely striking book.
Spine and corners bumped, cover edges worn. There is a 2" closed tear to lower edge of half-title page. Name and address in ink to verso of frontis mount. Tissue-guard for frontis is browned and foxed and the mount is very very lightly browned. Frontis itself just has a lower corner very very slightly creased. There is some light foxing to the contents (mainly at page edges) otherwise they are clean. A couple of the lower page edges have been chipped with small pieces missing (this just affects the very edges of the pages where they remain untrimmed). Original grey dustwrapper is edge worn and torn with 3" loss to top of spine. A nice copy in scarce dustwrapper.
