This book touches on many subjects including man traps, transportation to Australia, the Industrial Revolution and fox-hunting, to name but a few, it is essentially about values: how the gentry tried to impose theirs on England and how these, in turn, were undermined by new values, more compatible with the emerging capitalism of the nineteenth century. Burgundy cloth boards, gilt title to spine. ix and 255 pages including index. ISBN: 0521232848. Top of spine bumped. Upside down 'J' rubber ink stamp in blue to title page. Blue pictorial dustwrapper is browned, has a small chip to top of rear panel spine edge, and is fading to spine.
