THE BIRTH OF A BOROUGH: AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY OF ANGLO-SAXON STAFFORD

by Martin Carver

Published by The Boydell Press. 1st. 2010

Slightly better than very good condition. Large scale examination of an ordinary county town. Over the course of a ten year project, archaeologists discovered that Staffoprd in the dark ages had acted as a centre for the delivery of grain tribute, and it was this centre which was commandeered by Aethelflaeda, Lady of the Mercians, for the construction of her 'burh'. This new foundation was a fort, provided with a 'vicus' in which there was practised the centralised production of pottery ('Stafford Ware') and animal products... Large format. Matt pictorial boards. B/w photos and illustrations.

Boards lightly scuffed. Minor bumps to corners. Name & date in ink to front endpaper. Else contents clean.
