The author was a cleaner at Northampton shed in September 1943 at the age of 15, where he remained throughout his foot-plate career. Wonderfully observed, often humorous and extremely well written, this captivating account evokes much of the atmosphere of the run-down railway in post-war Britain. Large format. The Belgian industrial town of Charleroi was served by two of Europe's most characterful tramsways. Traditional two-axle trams still ran in the 1970s and then became part of the local network of the celebrated Vicinal, extended in 2012. This wide-ranging book explores the colourful history of the two tramways since 1940, with insight into the political and economic problems which lay behind their decline and partial revival.
