Biography of Walter Hancock who produced steam vehicles of many types, from his steam Phaeton of 1836 to the five ton Automaton. This is his life and work as written by his great great grand nephew. The second half of the book contains a reprint of Walter Hancock's Narrative of Twelve Years' Experiments (1824-36) dealing with Steam Carriages ont he Common Roads, together with the original engravings as published in 1838. Red cloth boards, gilt title to spine. B/w illustrations. ISBN: 0950134775. SIGNED by the author (with dedication) to title page. Faint damp patch from dustwrapper to rear board. Minor foxing to endpapers and text block. Tiny nick to lower edge of first couple of pages. Text block a little grubby and dampstained. Beautiful plates that have captioned page guards. Spine browned and worn with fraying to top & tail. Boards are grubby. Text block browned. Joints cracked but binding tight. SIGNED by John Greenaway and number 275 (?) of 500. Some minor foxing and age related marks presnt. All plates present. Plate on page 88 has a repaired closed tear which does not affect the actual illustration. Plate and tissue guard facing page 166 is creased at edges with a few tiny closed tears.
