So it was in late October 1940 Ulrich was to begin a phase of his life which would stretch him to the limit of physical endurance and to the edge of insanity. He was to become a prisoner of war, but he was not a man to embrace something as alien as imprisonment lightly and so he was to dedicate himself to the idea of escape... Claude Eatherly was the pilot of the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Since then, he has been almost constantly under psychiatric care. He is said to have blamed himself for "killing 100,000 innocent people", and to have sought punishment by committing a series of bizarre crimes. Black cloth boards, gilt title to spine. 299 pages. The author was commissioned as the official painter for the US Navy. Blue cloth boards, blue titles and vignette to front. 17 b/w drawings. xii and 48 pages. Boards a little grubby, lightly rubbed at edges, corners of boards bumped, white marks to top of rear board. Endpapers and text block browned, endpapers also grubby. Hinges pulled and a few minor margin marks present.
