A fable of war and peace, the story of a people so transformed and disfigured by hate that at one point Steadman actually considered drawing masks on the to hide their ugliness. The idea was disgarded when he came to draw the enemy and found that he could not - the enemy didn't exist. Based on a story told to Steadman by Dimitri Sidjanski. Large format. White boards with black silhouette to front cover. Colour illustrations. Not paginated. ISBN: 0448229781. SIGNED by the artist to title-page with a small doodle to the cannon illustration. Small nibble patch to base of spine of book. Ink (biro) 2.00 written to top corner of front free-endpaper. Some loss to lower spine corner of front panel of wrapper (where it was nibbled). Dustwrapper is lightly browned, some lifting of laminate at lower edge of front panel.

Large format. Red cloth with super gilt titles and vignettes of animals to front cover and spine. Green pictorial endpapers. 28 colour plates plus numerous b/w text illustrations. 293 pages. Spine bumped and faded with a little wear, spine feels stiff so possibly some glue applied to verso. Corners worn, lower front corner bumped. 1.5" abrasion to rear cover with slight loss of cloth. A few other small marks to covers. Joints cracked, showing webbing. Name in ink to half-title page. Light foxing to endpapers, prelims and a few fox spots throughout. A few marks to contents but generally clean. All plates present.
