Some browning and foxing to spine and cover edges. Nicks to top corner of spine. Inscription in ink to front endpaper. All plates are present - 2 are detached, but still present and loosely inserted. Several plate pages have ink dots (......) to margin at very edges, near where book is bound. Some pencil annotation to one page in prelims. Foxing.

A Tale of the Rise of the Dutch Republic. Brown cloth with gilt title area and decorations. 10 b/w plates + 4 plans. 384 pages + 32 page booklist. Spine bumped and worn with small splits to top and bottom. Small split to cloth between top of spine and rear board. Board edges are rubbed. Couple of white marks to front cover. Gilt and colour in vignettee are a little faded. Rear cover is marked and has a few scratches. Several hinges are cracked leaving the binding a little loose. Foxing and some fingering to contents. Plates are all clean.

Some hinges are pulled. Endpapers are browned. Foxing mainly to page edges and occasional fingering otherwise contents are clean.

Large tear to front panel, stain to bottom part of spine and panels alongside. Some browning. Clear tape stuck on verso to edges and tears. Foxed.

Detailed sections on spawning and homing, and a most interesting conclusion by the eminent author that salmon do not feed in fresh water. This raises an interesting question for those who indulge in fly-fishing! This book beautifully describes the strange and mysterious life history of the salmon. Some spotting to covers. Pale foxing to endpapers and outer page edges. Previous owners bookplate stuck to front pastedown. Wrapper is unevenly browned.
