Blue cloth, black titles to front and spine. 260 numbered pages. Colour frontis, b/w illustrations. Britannic Series. Spine and corners bumped and slightly rubbed. Large but neat inscription in ik to front pastedown. Foxing to textblock and page margins. Dustwrapper is worn and torn with slight loss and is grubby to rear panel and foxed on verso.

Small white mark to rear board. Tiny nick to lower edge of pages 59/60 and 61/62 (extremely minor). Else contents are fine. Pictorial dustwrapper is lightly rubbed at top of spine and slightly scuffed to rear panel.

The rarest of the Black's 20 Shilling Series. Assumed early edition/reprint in same year as 1st edition - as has 4 page booklist to rear. Spine is browned with a few chips and splits to top; some fraying to cloth. Corners are bumped. A bit of scuffing to rear cover. Inscription in pencil to front endpaper. Joints are starting to crack a little. Some foxing and browning.

Large format. Brown leather binding with gilt decoration, raised bands to spine. Gilt page edges. With 418 illustrations engraved by A. Closs. 487 pages. Some scuffs to leather at corners and edges, and a chip to leather towards top right corner of front board, and smaller chip at bottom of rear board. Leather on rear board is stained. Binding firm. Pressed flowers and foliage taped to front endpaper, with inscriptions. Endpapers foxed, some scattered foxing throughout contents, mainly to page margins. Engravings are generally clean and bright. A handsome volume.
