Pink cloth with elaborate gilt decorations. B/w frontis by Cruikshank. Believed to be the last book illustrated by him. The Rose And The Lily, How They Became the Emblems of England and France. A Fairy Tale. 62 pages + 36 page booklist dated October 1876. Top of spine chipped with loss. Spine browned and bumped and base. Small mark to front cover. Some page edges ragged from uneven opening.

Slightly better than very good condition in a very good dustwrapper.
'Untearable'. Green cloth spine, pictorial front board. 16 full-page colour illustrations plus sepia line drawings. Floral decorated endpapers. All edges dyed pink. Short animal tales told in verse. Spine slightly bumped, corners just a little worn. A tiny dent to lower edge of front cover. Endpapers are lightly browned with a couple of small crayon marks to front free-endpaper, also light vertical crease to edge of front free-endpaper which has a tiny tear at base. Staples are rusty. Contained in original paper dustwrapper (b/w illustration to front) which has a couple of small closed edge tears. Dustwrapper has done its job and kept the covers beautifully bright and clean!

On the way they meet various characters, both good and bad, such as Mrs. Discipline and her father Mr. Penalty, Fungus the Ferryman, Mrs. Steadfast, Mrs. Modesty and Charity the guide. An allegorical tale reminiscent of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Green and blue pictorial cloth, gilt title blocks to front cover and spine. 6 full page b/w engravings plus chapter head and tailpieces. 191 pages. Spine and corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Front endpaper browned. Small price label 'awarded in connection with Chums Empire Map Scheme' on front pastedown. Small foxspots to endpapers and half-title page otherwise the contents are beautifully clean and bright with all plates present. A super copy of this title, exceptionally rare in first edition.
