Almost very good condition.
The thoughts and feelings that have occupied the author's mind during a nine months' residence on the charming shores of North and South Devon. Green cloth boards, gilt title to spine. 28 colour & b/w plates. xvi and 451 pages including index. Spine faded to brown, edges of boards lightly faded, rear board damp stained to veritcal edge and a pen mark to lower edge. Corners rubbed and worn. Joints cracked and repaired. Name in ink to verso of front endpaper. Some hinges pulled but binding is tight. Some age related marks throughout including browning and foxing. All plates are present, some affected by foxing/browning.

Gilt vignette of crestof Ladies College Guernsey to front and rear board. Calf boards are rubbed, scuffed and marked. Binding is tight. Large prize plate to front pastedown. College stamp to fly-leaf and verso of rear endpaper. A few foxspots and light browning, most plates affected by foxing.

One plate has a margin crease. A nice copy considering its age.

Top & tail of spine and corners lightly rubbed. Text block browned. Top of title page has been cut off and is missing but does not affect the title itself. Some light page browning. Rear endpapers a little grubby. Overall a decent copy.

Several entire chapters have been added to make the survey of the animate creation more complete, and the whole haws been carefully revised. Green cltoh boards, gitl title and vignettes to spine, vignette of large bowl with a fish inside to front board. Title to spine is 'Life by P.H. Gosse'. B/w plates and illustrations to text. viii and 363 pages including index. Spine browned, split & worn at edges. Corners rubbed and worn. Contemporary inscription in ink to front endpaper and name in pencil. Joints split, cracked to bottom, starting to come unstuck from spine. Text block browned. Prelims almost detached. A few pencil annotations (underlining), grubby marks and some foxing. A good working copy, sold with all faults.

P.H. Gosse (1810-88) was among the most distinguished natural historians in the nineteenth century. He was a true field naturalist, and all his work is pervaded with his own observations. This bibliography is the result of a collaboration between an expert on Gosse and natural-history writing in general in an attempt to provide a complete inventory of all the writings of Gosse, with full bibliographical descriptions and analysis of various editions, issues and bindings. Black cloth boards, gilt title to spine. xviii and 148 pages including index. ISBN: 0712909354. A nice copy. White pictorial dustwrapper is a little grubby.
