On the outbreak of the War in 1914 Wilfred Nunn was the commander of the gunboat Espiegle on the East Indies station. His ship was sent to the Arabian Gulf to defend British oil interests, and he thus became the senior naval officer on the Tigris river throughout the Iraq campaign, up to the capture of Bagdad in 1917.
