Peer Gynt is first and foremost a poetic fantasy, although based on a real person who lived Norway c1800. About his exploits, not much more is known than is found in Asbjornsen's book Norwegian Fairy Tales, in which Peer Gynt's chief exploits lie in the direction of fighting and conqueroring trolls. Admirably depicted by the "Goblin Master" in 12 colour plates plus b/w text illustrations. Brown cloth, gilt titles and vignette to front cover. Cream and brown pictorial endpapers. 255 pages. Slight fading to covers. Spine and corners bumped, rubbed and slightly worn. Library(?) number written to base of spine (839.8). Blue ink stamp of WH to front pastedown. Some light foxing to page edges.

Damp markings to page edges, including pastedowns. Inscription in ink to front endpaper. Some ink marks to front endpaper and pastedown. Foxing to outer page edges.

All plates present, two have a creased corner. Spine and corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Inscription in ink to front endpaper. A few hinges are pulled but binding still sound. Very occasional foxspots to contents.

Light foxing to covers with some darkening to top and bottom edges. Ink inscription to front pastedown. Foxing, mainly to endpapers and text block. Grubby fingermarks to first few pages, rest clean. Price-cut dustwrapper is edge worn with tears and chips, loss from top of spine and top of front flap. Hole to front edge of spine. Very grubby.

Contents very good, just an odd mark. All colour plates present, two are partially detached.

All colour plates present and have light unobtrusive foxing, plate facing page 112 has tiny closed tear to lower margin not affecting illustration. Neat colouring to page 7 and 35 in pencil crayon. A few hinges pulled. Some scattered foxing to contents, mainly to prelims and last few rear pages. Overall, a nice copy.
